Cholesterol is a fatty substance.Your body needs cholesterol to rebuild its cells and  to make certain hormones, vitamin D and bile acids. Cholesterol also helps in the formation of your memories and is vital for neurological function. It's carried throughout your body in your bloodstream.

Cholesterol levels generally rise with age. High cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Your liver makes about 80 percent of your body’s cholesterol. The rest comes from your diet. Dietary cholesterol is found in foods from animal sources, such as eggs, meats, and dairy products.

There are two types of cholesterol :

  • 1.low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad" cholesterol
  • 2.high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good" cholesterol
HDL helps to keep 'bad' cholesterol away from your arteries and remove any excess from arterial plaque, which may help to prevent heart disease.

LDL circulates in our blood and may clogs up in your arteries, forming plaque that makes your arteries narrow and less flexible (a condition called atherosclerosis). If a clot forms in one of these narrowed arteries leading to your heart or brain, a heart attack or stroke may result.

CAUSES:

The level of your bad cholesterol can depend upon many factors such as - Age,Diet,Physical Activity,Weight etc.
Another cause of high cholesterol is eating foods that are high in saturated fats and cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream can settle as fatty deposits on the inside of your blood vessels. These build up over time to become scars, called plaques. LDL cholesterol also stimulates extra cell growth in the lining of the arteries, reducing their diameter. Plaque can damage and clog the arteries, including the coronary arteries feeding the heart. This process is called atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and can result in angina (chest pain), heart attack, or stroke. High levels of LDL cholesterol cause more plaque buildup and increase the risk of a heart attack.
Lowering cholesterol levels reduces the risk of developing coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, and other disorders.

So if you want to avoid these problems which is caused by cholesterol, you have to follow a healthy lifestyle. You have to-

  • i.follow a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol.
  • ii.eat a wide variety of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts, and seeds
  • iii.boost your level of physical activity
  • iv.maintain a healthy body weight
  • v.limit your alcohol consumption
  • vi.quit smoking and keep your blood pressure down. It will help lower your risk of developing angina, heart attack, and stroke.
